Cambodia on target for five million international tourists in 2016

Statistics just issued by the Ministry of Tourism in Cambodia indicate the number of international arrivals could top the five million mark for 2016. Kong Sopheareak is the ministry’s director of information and he explained that 3.5 million overseas tourists had visited between 1 January and the end of September.

The director carried on by saying this was a 4.8 per cent rise when compared to the same months in 2015. He added that taking into account the upward trajectory in visitor arrivals it was not inconceivable the annual figure could reach five million for the first time.

Breaking down the nationalities of the visitors shows a high proportion are from regional Asian nations. Although the amount of tourists from Vietnam still topped the list, increasing numbers of tourists are coming from Thailand and China.

Cambodia welcomed almost 700,000 Vietnamese nationals while the number of people from Thailand rose 19 per cent to 256,000. The number of visitors from China climbed 12.5 per cent to 577,000.
