Decision on purchase of Bangkok electric buses due today

A proposal by Bangkok’s public transport operator to buy electric buses is due to be presented to the Thai government today. The nation’s deputy transport-minister says that if the cabinet gives the thumbs up to the 200 buses the contract will be put out to tender straight away.

Ormsin Chivapruck explained that the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) has already draughted its requirements and these will be released so that interested parties are able to submit their bids in January. He said a final decision on the successful bidder would be announced in March.

Surachai Eamvachirasakul is the director of the BMTA and he says about 10 vehicle makers have said they are interested in bidding to supply the buses. The budget for the acquirement of the 200 buses is THB2.3 billion.

The upgrade of the city’s bus fleet comes under the auspices of the government’s aim to improve public transport and make it more environmentally friendly. 12GO ASIA offers ticketing services for inter-provincial buses departing from Bangkok’s Morchit, Ekkamai and Southern bus stations.
