Thailand high speed rail development slows down

Thailand’s transport minister says four high-speed railway projects due to start this year have been put back until next year. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith says that while the initial start of the developments is behind schedule, the deadline for completion is the same.

The minister said the four affected projects should be finished over the course of 2017. Government sources say there are two reasons for the holdups. The first is that final surveys remain unfinished and the other is disagreement between Thailand and its Chinese partners on the design aspects of some of the infrastructure.

The first of the projects is a much maligned mini-stretch of tracks in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Dubbed the Train to Nowhere, this sampler track will only be 3.5kms long when it finally gets laid near Klang Dong Village’s rail station.

The other three projects involve significantly longer track upgrades. The first is the 250km stretch linking Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima and the second is also northbound from Bangkok and will run for 380kms to Phitsanulok. The last upgrade is the 190km southbound line to Hua Hin.
