Yangon authorities to tackle reckless bus drivers

Authorities in Myanmar are preparing to crack down on bus drivers in Yangon who do not obey road safety rules. The ministry with jurisdiction over transportation in the nation is considering a scheme to dish out harsh punishment to drivers who endanger the lives of passengers and other road users.

NLD representative U Nyi Nyi told parliament that drivers of the ubiquitous Yangon urban BM buses were renowned for disobeying traffic laws and driving without consideration for pedestrians, motorcycles and cars. He carried on by saying that after accidents drivers invariably fled the scene.

Other common complaints made about the drivers are they do not keep to their designated routes and they continually overcharge for fares. The transport ministry says that while authorities are empowered to take action against rogue bus drivers, the maximum penalties are not adequate enough to provide a deterrent.

Parliament is currently debating whether to bring in a law that will see the operating licences for the bus as well as the driver annulled in cases of proven negligence and deliberate endangerment of others. Yangon council figures show there are currently 400-plus of the dilapidated BM buses on the roads of the city.

Intercity buses in Myanmar tend to be more modern, but trains or aeroplanes provide that little extra comfort for long distance journeys. 12GO ASIA offers advance reservations services for both on routes linking destinations including Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan and Naypyidaw.
