Power from the sun to illuminate ancient Hoi An

City officials in Hoi An say they have secured the funding needed to set up a solar lighting system for the Old Town precinct.  The new lights will be powered by solar panels and erected around the central plaza close to the landmark Japanese Covered Bridge.

A spokesperson stated that the government of Germany had agreed to pay 90 per cent of the US$147,000 needed. Hoi An’s council and that of Wernigerode, its twin-city in Germany, will split the remaining costs equally between them.

The project will enable the historic Vietnamese city to illuminate the Japanese Bridge (Chua Cau) plus pagodas and the other iconic structures it is famed for. A 55kWh unit will also provide the necessary power needed to give light to the many visual and performing arts shows held here.

Hoi An attracts with its laid back ambience, wealth of sightseeing attractions and thriving cottage industries. It is also midway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and provides a convenient place to rest up for a few days when making this epic overland journey.
