Heritage trust mulls creating public plaza at Yangon Railway Station

The Yangon Heritage Trust has recommended transforming vacant land outside the city’s railway station into a public plaza. Commenting on a recently released study by the YHT, vice-chairperson Daw Moe Moe Lwin said it was a heaven sent chance to provide something practical for residents and tourists to enjoy.

She carried on by saying the 63-acre block of land would be big enough to stage major public events too. The YHT report stated that the plaza could be turned into a green lung for Myanmar’s biggest city and could be used as a venue for festival and sports events, and even a night market.

The proposed site is sandwiched between Yangon’s Central Station and Bogyoke Aung San Stadium. Myanmar Railways owns the land and has previously offered it up for tender to developers. It is due to announce the successful contenders by May 2017.

Daw Moe Moe Lwin explained that erecting more high-rise structures in the centre of the city would destroy its skyline and block views of other heritage landmarks including the station itself. Train services from Yangon Central Station to Mandalay and Bagan are a popular choice for travellers making reservations with 12GO ASIA.
