Heritage trust lays out road map to preserve Yangon culture draws

The Yangon Trust Organisation has released a report detailing plans to preserve the city’s cultural draws and attractions for posterity. The 150-page tome is entitled the Yangon Heritage Strategy and it lays out a plan that will conserve the city’s principal sights and recreation zones, but allows for sustainable development.

The proposals include one to knock down structures blocking views of the old colonial edifices on Strand Road. Another is to transform the area around Shwedagon Pagoda into a green zone with the creation of public parks.

The Trust Organisation would also like to see the city’s grand public buildings revamped and restored for use as hotels, shopping centres and libraries. Another aspiration is to turn the downtown colonial area into a hub for cultural and arts exhibitions and performances.

The body says city authorities need to introduce legislation governing the maximum height for the construction of any new buildings. The final main recommendation is to enhance public transport and includes the improvement of ferry services to enable commuters to cross the Yangon and Bago rivers to reach downtown.

Yangon and Myanmar are fast regaining their place on the mainstream international tourism trail. 12GO ASIA provides ease when booking travel tickets to get here and also to domestic destinations.
