Construction date for oft delayed Thailand rail project confirmed

The transport-minister of Thailand has confirmed that construction on a much delayed rail project will start in December. Arkhom Termpittayapaisith told attendees at a seminar arranged by Thailand Post Publishing that contracts for the first phase of the 250km line were in their final stages of preparation.

He continued by saying the contracts for Phase I should be ready for final approval next month and the government would be inviting contractors to submit bids in November. Phase I is 3,500 metres of track in Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

Minister Termpittayapaisith explained that this part of the line is near Klang Dong Station and on land the State Railway of Thailand already owns. He added that the terrain here is also level and was the ideal spot for breaking ground on a rail route that will eventually link Thailand, Laos and China.

The first full sector of the project will connect Nakhon Ratchasima and Bangkok. Extensions on the drawing board could see this initial segment expanded south   to Rayong on the country’s eastern seaboard and northeast to Nong Khai. The latter faces across the Mekong River to Laos.

12GO has expanding travel ticketing options to cover numerous locations across Southeast Asia recently. When, or if, these new high-speed routes and services become available we will add them to our ticket options portfolio.
