Toilets now free at majority of Thai intercity bus stations

Thailand’s Transport Ministry has announced the abolition of fees for using toilets at two thirds of the nation’s intercity bus stations. The move is a part of the government’s aim of improving hygiene and ensuring people have access to basic bathroom facilities.

A ministry spokesperson said the restroom fees had been scrapped at 70 bus stations under the jurisdiction of the National Transport Division. He added that the facilities at another 47 bus stations were being run under franchise by private operators. The standard charge for using these pay facilities is still THB3.

Following an inspection tour, Transport Division head Sanit Promwong told reporters that representatives would be holding talks with franchisees in the near future about making their toilets free too. He added that inspectors would be taking a look at bus station toilets nationwide to ensure they complied with regulations governing the likes of cleanliness and access for elderly and disabled people.

Thailand’s bus network is comprehensive and there are few inhabited corners of the country it does not reach. 12GO ASIA sells tickets for a high number of the destinations on the network. These come with the advantage of being able to pre-book online.
