Malaysia proposes Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok express train link

Thailand has confirmed a visiting Malaysian government delegation has put forward a proposal to build a high-speed international railway line. Thai transport-minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith told reporters the joint project would connect the capital cities of the two nations.

He continued by saying his Malaysian counterpart, Liow Tiong Lai, had suggested upgrading the tracks so they were able to accommodate express trains. Current services between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok require passengers to change trains at Butterworth, Padang Besar or Hat Yai.

The two nations have agreed to draught a memorandum of understanding confirming their intentions on this project and also road-bridges on their common border. Mr Termpittayapaisith noted that the Malaysian delegation said the train link would provide a seamless connection with a forthcoming Kuala Lumpur to Singapore high-speed service.

The Bangkok to Singapore route provides the ultimate rail journey. Including changes, total travel time is around 40 hours. Sleeping berths are available for parts of the trip. 12GO ASIA provides a practical service which enables travellers to reserve their seats and sleeping berths for the whole journey.
