Hanoi bars cars from Hoan Kiem Lake on weekend evenings

Authorities in Hanoi have designated the zones surrounding the city’s landmark Hoan Kiem Lake as pedestrian precincts on weekend evenings. The edict says all vehicular traffic, apart from goods delivery vehicles, is banned between the hours of 19:00 and 24:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.

The ban came into effect at the beginning of September. Municipal workers have already begun the process of erecting signs warning drivers and motorcyclists when they are not permitted to enter.  In total, more than 20 signs are being put up.

To ensure the changeover goes smoothly on the designated days, traffic calming mechanisms and spacious car parks are also planned. Hoan Kiem is one of Hanoi’s most beloved leisure spots and is home to the iconic Turtle Tower, the red Huc Bridge and Jade Mountain Temple.

During the evening, tourists are able to enjoy the likes of dragon dances and snacking on Vietnam’s signature delicacies in the locality. A good proportion of the Old Quarter’s accommodation is within a few minutes on foot of the lake.
