Bangkok Golden Rail Line gets green light from Thai cabinet

Thailand’s government cabinet yesterday gave a nod of approval to another new city rail line for Bangkok. The so-called Golden Route will run between Thonburi and Prachathipok and will incorporate two additional stations at Charoen Nakhon and Klong San en route.

Construction and development of the line will be done in two phases. The first stretch is 1.7kms long and will run from Thonburi as far as the locality of Taksin Hospital in Klong San. The second phase is 0.9kms and will forge a final link to an interchange with Purple Line urban trains.

The cabinet noted that there was a possibility the route could be extended to the Asiatique Complex some time in the future. The estimated date the Golden Line will open to the travelling public is 2023. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has been tasked with assessing the feasibility of the project.

The authority’s first task is deciding whether the line should be underground or elevated. A BMA spokesperson stated that the route would provide greater convenience for tourists and residents on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River.
