Forthcoming Thai rail link turns Poipet into boom town

The reconstruction of a rail link to Thailand has resulted in rapid expansion in the town on the Cambodian side of the border. The governor of Poipet told reporters recently the town now has two industrial estates and that workers from all over Cambodia were arriving with the anticipation of a boom in job availability.

Governor Ngo Meng Chroun noted that the soon-to-open rail hook-up with Aranyaprathet in Thailand would make the transportation of products easy and encourage cross-border travel. He continued by saying the infrastructure improvements would likely bring investors running.

Ministry of Public Works spokesperson Va Simsorya said the 6.5km track between Stung Bot and Poipet will be finished by year’s end. This and another 10km stretch of line to Mongkol Borey are being built with the support of the Asian Development Bank. This latter line is also due to be finished by the new year.

Mr Simsorya continued by saying that Cambodia and Thailand are expected to discuss cross-border trains and traffic in the near future. He finished off by saying train services would probably launch some time in 2017.

12GO ASIA currently offers ticketing options on more than 5,000 travel routes in Southeast Asia. Once passenger trains start operating between Thailand and Cambodia we expect to add these to our portfolio.
