Thai tourism bureau asks Pokemon for help on less travelled roads

The national tourism office of Thailand has submitted a plea to the creators of Pokémon Go to release virtual beings in the country’s less visited provinces. The request says the nation would appreciate the release of rare Pokémons in 24 provinces not typically on the agendas of tourists.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand made the unusual request in the wake of a slight drop in the numbers of tourists visiting. The provinces the bureau has requested Niantic to add virtual creatures to include Chumphon, Rayong, Lampang and Loei plus large swathes of the eastern Esarn region.

National Information Technology Office director Siripakorn Chiewsamut says he and the tourism bureau are still waiting for a response from Niantic. The game developer has responded to a appeal from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission to establish no-go precincts for gamers in Thailand.

After a silence lasting several weeks, Niantic sent a fax to the broadcasting agency saying it was prepared to open dialogue on the matter. 12GO ASIA sells tickets to all the major destinations in Thailand’s 76 provinces and covers almost 3,000 bus, train, ferry and flight routes.
