Bangkok transport operator sets opening deadline for subway extension

Bangkok’s urban rail firm has set a deadline of February 2019 for the opening of a westbound subway extension to Lak Song. The head of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority says the time limit has been set so that all agencies comply with a special addict issued by the ruling Thai government.

Yodyuth Boonyathikarn says the Section 44 special command has urged all agencies to expedite completion dates for rail extensions and new routes to give commuters and travellers more choice. The extension in question is an add-on of the Blue Subway Line from Hua Lamphong Railway Station to Lak Song.

The route is almost 16kms long and will link the two locations via a Chao Phraya River tunnel. The extension will have four stations and chairperson Boonyathikarn says these will be themed on iconic Bangkok visitor sites.

One of the new stations is Itsaraphap. The blueprint for this station shows its interior is being crafted to represent the murals and columns of the famed Hong Rattanaram Ratchaworawihan Temple. Another station, Sanam Chai, has been designed so that it will look like the grand hall of a medieval Thai palace.
