New Bangkok Mahananakhon tower to open with dramatic light show

An extravaganza of lights will officially inaugurate Bangkok’s newest landmark this evening. The 77-storey MahaNakhon Tower has gradually risen above the Thai capital’s skyline over the past few years and its developers have scheduled two light shows to mark the completion.

Mahananakhon Rising will feature two Night of Lights shows. The debut will kick off at 19:30 and the follow-up at 20:25. MahaNakhon is running a contest for the best photograph, or video footage, of the lighting spectaculars and a top prize of THB100,000 is up for grabs.

All entrants have to do is post up their imagery on Facebook or Instagram. Photographing MahaNakhon Tower is hardly going to be onerous as its unique facade has already won rave reviews from designers and architects the world over.

The designers of the tower crafted it so that each floor is different. The resulting appearance is pixellated and seems to swirl when viewed from a distance. Although the skyline of the downtown Silom-Sathorn zone is noted for its skyscrapers, MahaNakhon really stands out from the crowd.

The word MahaNakhon is part of the full 170-character name for Bangkok in the English translation of the Thai language name. The tower boasts upmarket dining and retail outlets, a five-star hotel and swanky Ritz-Carlton apartments.
