PTT inks deal with foreign carmakers on electric vehicle development

Thailand’s biggest oil, gas and petrol firm has agreed terms with six leading global car manufacturers on the development of electric vehicles. Earlier this month, PTT Public Company Limited signed contracts with the in-country management teams of Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, BMW and Volvo.

Under the terms of the partnership, PTT will assume responsibility for establishing EV (electric vehicle) charge stations and the carmakers will develop the technology for the cars. Commenting on the tie-up, PTT CEO Tevin Vonvanich said the company had been developing EV technology for the past four years.

Mr Vonvanich noted that PTT already had four EV stations and another two were due online before year’s end. He finished off by saying the total number of EV stations should reach 20 by the end of next year.

State-owned PTT’s collaboration on developing EVs corresponds with the current Thai government’s efforts to embrace their use. Energy-minister Anantaporn Karnchanarat told reporters the government wanted to promote the switch to EVs and had set a target of one million on the roads of Thailand by 2036.
