Tourists to pay more for Thai visas issued at air and land gateways

The fee for visas issued at Thailand’s airports and border crossings is set to double next month. An increase in the price of visas-on-arrival will see them rise from the current THB1,000 to THB2,000 on 27 September.

Tourists from countries in the G7 bloc, Europe and numerous other nations around the world will not be affected as they get visa-free entry for 15 or 30 days. This is dependent on their particular country and whether they arrive by air or land.

Nationals of 19 countries have to apply for visas-on-arrival when they enter via one of Thailand’s 42 officially designated entry points. This restriction applies to citizens of India and China as well as the likes of Lithuania, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan.

Visas-on-arrival for Thailand are valid for 15 days from the date of issue. The new cost of this visa is double that of a standard tourist visa issued at Thai consulates and embassies worldwide. These tourist visas cost THB1,000, or the equivalent in local currency, but last for 60 days from the date the holder arrives in Thailand.

Tourist industry professionals claim the hike in the cost of visas-on-arrival is an attempt by Thai authorities to get tourists to apply for the correct visa before travelling. Before arriving in Thailand it is a good idea to reserve your onward travel tickets with 12GO ASIA.
