Thai meteorologists warn of adverse weather and heavy seas

Thailand’s Meteorological Department says bad weather will sweep across the nation over the next few days. Forecasters say heavy rain which has already caused extensive flooding in the eastern province of Nan and neighbouring Laos is heading west.

The department explained that storms will hit the northern regions of Thailand over the next few days. They are expected to reach Mae Hong Son and Tak by Saturday. The department warned that the rainstorms would probably cause some minor disruptions to public transport services.

The forecasters say the storms will not be confined to the north and heavy winds are expected to generate high waves on both sides of the southern Thai peninsula. It says waves could be up to four metres high at the top end of the Gulf of Thailand and on the west-facing Andaman Sea shoreline.

The Meteorological Department stated that high waves and strong undercurrents would make beaches dangerous for swimming and tourists should stay out of the sea. The statement also said public ferry and cargo ship captains needed to exercise caution when at sea and that small vessels should not set sail until the weather cleared at the weekend.
