The NARI’s deputy-director told media sources that the phenomenon should start around midnight tonight and at its peak stargazers will be able to see 150 meteors an hour. Doctor Saran Potyachinda said that although shooting stars can be seen on various occasions during the year, Perseids are bright, abundant and come a close second to the better known Leonids in their beauty.
The doctor continued by saying that for Thais, the Perseids are auspicious as they generally occur around the 12 August. This date marks the birthday of Thailand’s honoured Queen Sirikit.
NARI’s astronomers explained that lunar conditions are favourable for the shooting stars and they should be visible from all parts of the country unless it is cloudy. At the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the US, astronomers stated that this year’s Perseids could be the most spectacular for many years.
