Myanmar travel agencies asked to keep misbehaving tourists in check

The tourism ministry in Myanmar has issued orders to in-country travel agents telling them to keep badly behaved visitors under control. Confirming the crackdown, Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA) general-secretary Daw Thatoe Thuzar Aung stated laminated posters listing the dos and don’ts would be distributed.

She continued by saying the posters would be given to tour agents, guides, drivers and any other tourism professionals and establishments who dealt with foreign tourists. The general-secretary finished with the statement that the posters would be ready in time for the start of the peak tourist season at the end of next month.

Included on the list are requests not to wear unsuitable clothing when sightseeing at religious or historic sites as well as places frequented by the public. This generally means covering the upper arms as far as just above the elbows and the knees too. This applies to both males and females

The posters also note smoking is not allowed in shopping centres, hotels, restaurants and government offices. Another don’t is chewing betel nut, a taboo that is unlikely to bother the average foreign tourist.
