Bangkok authority nominates new underground train link firm

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand has approved the appointment of an operator for a new Bangkok train link. A spokesperson for the authority says it will sign a formal contract with the Bangkok Expressway and Metro Company next month.

The link will connect the underground train line stations of Bang Sue and Tao Poon Station. Once the terms of the contract have been settled, Bangkok Expressway and Metro will start on the installation of the electrics and signalling required to make it operational.

The Bang Sue to Tao Poon extension plus one from Hua Lampong are four-fifths finished and expected to open for passenger services in three years time. The Thai government has endorsed a number of projects to improve travel choices in Bangkok and the Blue Line underground extensions are a part of upgrades designed to link all areas of the city.

The current public train system in Bangkok comprises the one underground line, two linked Skytrain lines and the Airport Link to Suvarnabhumi Airport. The Purple Line is due to open this month and will link Tao Poon and Talad Bang Yai stations.
