Thai government endorses new Bangkok train routes

The government of Thailand has given the go-ahead for the construction of two more train lines in Bangkok. Thai media sources quoted Ormsin Chivapruck, the deputy-transport-minister, as saying the contracts for the construction of the Light Red and Dark Red lines would probably be put out to tender next month.

The two are both extensions of lines currently under construction. This segment of the Dark Red line will run between Bang Sue and Hua Lamphong Railway Station. The Light Red line will link Bang Sue and Hua Mark.

The State Railway of Thailand has calculated the cost of the two lines will be THB44 billion. The initial tender calls for construction work to begin next February and a completion date in 2020.

The two planned urban rail lines are part of the Thai government’s scheme to upgrade public transport in the country so that it caters to the needs of 21st century travellers and commuters. There are almost 20 ongoing projects in Bangkok plus proposed high-speed intercity train upgrades to the likes of Hua Hin and Pattaya on the drawing board.
