Mao Thora explained that Vietnam had promised to provide funds of US$2 million to build a market in the eastern Cambodia province of Tbong Khmum. He told reporters the market would be located in the Memot District village of Kandorl and around one kilometre from the Vietnamese frontier.
Mr Thora carried on by saying that once the market was open, stallholders would sell goods and edible produce produced in both Cambodia and Vietnam. Vietnamese Industry and Trade Ministry deputy-minister Nguyen Cam Tu noted that the facility would provide people living in the border zones with a marketplace to sell their products and this would help improve their quality of life.
Although Cambodia and Vietnam have signed the memorandum-of-understanding on building Kandorl Market they have not stipulated a timeline. Neither of the two representatives would be drawn an on an actual start date for construction. Mr Thora did note that Vietnam was managing the development and would be putting it out to tender in the near future.
