Aranyaprathet consigns fake designer products to incinerator

Dignitaries in Aranyaprathet oversaw the ritual destruction of millions of baht worth of fake designer goods on Monday. Customs officials in the eastern Thai border town estimated the market value of the incinerated products was THB50 million.

Thai Customs Division Director Kulis Sombatsiri and the governor of Sa Kaeo Province, Pakarathorn Thienchai, kicked off the ceremony by snipping at a few choice pieces with scissors. After this, about 100,000 counterfeited T-shirts, sunglasses, handbags and sports shoes were sent to the local incinerator.

Rong Kluea Market is a huge complex right beside the official Thai-Cambodian border crossing in Aranyaprathet. Local officials allege a steady stream of smuggled designer articles makes its way across the border from Cambodia and is sold by vendors at Rong Kluea. The crackdown on the trade was ordered by prime-minister Prayut Chan-ocha.

Stallholders at Rong Kluea Market sell an eclectic selection of second-hand clothing and handicrafts. The market is 225kms from Bangkok and about five from Aranyaprathet. 12GO ASIA sells travel tickets for buses and trains plying this route.
