Thailand and Cambodia agree to add cross border bus routes

Thailand and Cambodia last week agreed to boost the number of bus routes and licensed good vehicles linking the two nations. Transport Ministry officials from the two countries met with their counterparts from four other Mekong region nations in Bangkok.

Representatives from Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar plus southern China worked out the terms of the Cross-Border Transport Facilitation Agreement with Thailand and Cambodia. Apart from Myanmar, the agreement will see each country issue 500 licences for tourist buses and cargo lorries to its neighbour.

Cambodia and Vietnam already have an agreement in place with this number of licensed vehicles. The same is not true for Cambodia and Thailand. A quota hammered out back in 2002 allows for just 40 licensed vehicles from the other to cross their common border.

After the successful conclusion of the discussions, Arkhom Tempittayapaisith, Thailand’s transport-minister, said his staff would be working with Cambodia to implement the increased quota. He noted that the finer details still needed to be ironed out, but the quota hike should be in place before the end of 2016.

12GO ASIA currently offers travel ticketing services on key routes from Bangkok and Phnom Penh. Once the new international routes are inaugurated we will probably serve these too.
