Bangkok commuters gripe about mooted Skytrain fare hikes

Train travellers in Bangkok have taken to social media to vent their frustration over a possible increase in BTS Skytrain fares. The proposed rise is only in the early stages of discussions, but Twitter and Facebook users are already up in arms and have posted up critical messages.

One widely read post rhetorically asked if outlying stations would cost THB90 to get to in the near future.  This message was showing on the official portals of both the Skytrain and the governor of Bangkok. Another post queried the quality of the Skytrain service and said sorting this out ought to come before any fare hikes.

The online rants came in response to an off the cuff remark by a Bangkok Transport Department official who claimed fares needed to be adjusted in order to reflect the economic climate. The official noted that fares should be THB10 higher for passengers travelling to the outer suburban stations on the two Skytrain lines.

If the green light for the mooted hike is forthcoming, passengers travelling beyond On Nut Station on the Sukhumvit Line and Saphan Taksin on the Silom line will pay either THB5 or THB10 more. The higher fare would be for the final two stations on each route.
