Thai transport division targets rogue Don Muang cabbies

Thailand’s Land Transport Department has inaugurated a campaign to stop taxi drivers from fleecing passengers arriving at Bangkok’s second airport. Nanthapong Cherdchu is the deputy-director of the department and he says inspectors are conducting random checks.

He explained that there were never enough waiting taxis at Don Muang Airport during the morning and evening rush hours. He noted the situation was exacerbated at this airport as multiple flights tend to land within short periods of time.

Mr Cherdchu carried on by saying passengers arriving between 07:00 and 09:00, or 16:00 and 20:00, often had to walk out to the Vibhavadi Rangsit Highway as there were no taxis waiting in the airport ranks. He said this was the core of the problem as cabbies driving these vehicles were often unlicensed.

He continued by alleging these drivers overcharged or refused to accept fares if they did not fit in with their personal agendas. Mr Cherdchu finished off by saying inspectors would be checking all taxis in the environs of Don Muang during peak travel hours.
