Bangkok Skytrain southern extension to open earlier than expected

A senior official with the Thai Transport division says an extension to Bangkok’s Skytrain network will open earlier than planned. Traffic and Transportation Department director Taweesak Lertprapan says the southbound extension of the Sukhumvit Line will accept its first passengers next year.

The full extension is 13kms long and will link Bearing Station to the factory estates at Samut Prakarn. Mr Lertprapan explained that civil engineers were expediting the connection from Bearing to the first new station at Samrong so that local residents got full benefits as soon as possible.

He carried on by saying this section and Samrong Station would open next March.  The remaining eight stations, including the terminus at Kheha Samut Prakan, are scheduled to come into service in 2018 which is one year earlier than originally forecast.

Mr Lertprapan finished off by saying the bulk of the civil engineering work on the extension was complete and there was only about 10 per cent left to do. The BTS Skytrain link will ease traffic congestion on highways in both Samut Prakan and Bangkok’s Bang Na District.
