Bangkok Check Inn 99 club gets new lease of life and new home

One of Bangkok’s original night clubs has been given a new home after being unceremoniously evicted from its old one after a six-decade residence. The Check Inn 99 has been a staple of Bangkok nightlife since it was renamed from the Copacobana in the early 1960s.

The owner of the Sukhumvit Road premises gave Check Inn proprietor Chris Catto-Smith just one month to up sticks and move at the beginning of June. Mr Catto-Smith said he initially struggled to find a suitable venue to relocate to until one time Check Inn owner Bent Laasholdt suggested moving to the same address his new pub occupied.

The move to the premises in the cellar of the Soi Sukhumvit 24 building was completed in time for the start of the Sunday jazz session yesterday. Mr Catto-Smith noted that the move to the same building as Laasholdt’s Admiral’s Pub was ideal and would enable the two to grow together.

Going forward, Catto-Smith noted that the jazz sessions would be held every Sunday and live band Music of the Heart are due back on the stage some time this week and will perform nightly. During its lengthy history, Check Inn 99 has garnered a reputation for quality food and beverages, and as one of the top spots on Sukhumvit to enjoy reasonably priced happy-hour drinks.
