Horse drawn carriages set to offer Yala sightseeing odysseys

Authorities in the Thai town of Yala say they plan to seek funds to inaugurate a horse-drawn carriage sightseeing service. Officials in the town say the project would offer tourists something different and also provide much needed employment for local residents.

Kongsakul Chantarat noted that the town council planned to submit an application for funding to the Thai government. He added that Yala had already received a budget allocation under the government’s THBfive-million-per-subdistrict scheme and saw no reason why this one would be refused.

Mr Chantarat explained that horse-drawn carriages would be another string to Yala’s tourism bow. He finished off by saying if the project got the green light, the first carriages would probably appear on the town’s streets before the end of 2016.

Yala is in the deep south of Thailand and a convenient base for reaching the lovely and unspoilt beaches of Narathiwat or travelling onwards to Malaysia. Bang Lang National Park and Yala Central Mosque are among local tourism draws, but for many visitors the chief attraction is an ambience evoking the small town of yesteryear.
