Thailand Laos to inaugurate Nan to Luang Prabang bus services

Thailand and Laos are preparing to inaugurate an international bus route which will link key tourism destinations. The service from Muang Nan in northeast Thailand to the Lao UNESCO town of Luang Prabang is due to launch next month.

Thailand’s Land Transport Department director Sanit Phromwong noted that buses would travel via Xayabouri. The Mekong River demarcates the two countries’ common border in this region of Thailand and passengers will cross it at Tha Deua.

Services will operate once daily in each direction with total journey times of six hours. Mr Phromwong said the state-operated Transport Company would be running services on the Thai side and planned to utilise 17-seater minibuses as they were better suited to the hilly and bendy roads in the locale.

Laos as well as Thailand is using its state bus operator to provide services. Both countries claim national security as the reason private companies are not allowed to provide services on international bus routes.

A proposal to start Nan to Luang Prabang bus services was first tabled in 1999, but it was not until last month that the green light was forthcoming. This service will take the number of international bus routes linking Thailand to Laos and Cambodia to more than 10.
