Monsoon deluges inundate the streets of Bangkok

Heavy monsoon rainfall on Monday night caused flooding throughout Bangkok and left residents marooned in their homes yesterday morning. The Flood Prevention Division of the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) warned that 30 arterial roads in the city were virtually impassable.

In one lane leading out of Rama 9 Road, the water was 50 centimetres deep and impassable to all but 4WD vehicles and delivery trucks. Commuters were forced to take public transport to work or their educational establishments as buses and cars were only able to move at speeds akin to walking pace.

Motorcycle taxi drivers did a brisk trade delivering people to Skytrain and underground rail stations. Ticket halls and platforms at the stations were swamped with passengers waiting for trains. Officials at Don Muang Airport stated that many people had missed their flights as they were stuck in traffic jams.

The downpour started at around 01:00 on Tuesday morning and didn’t ease off until nearly dawn. The Thai Meteorological Department noted that some parts of the city were hit with 90-millimetres of rain.

BMA flood prevention squads were still working to clear floods late yesterday. Meteorologists say the forecast for this week is more storms and heavy rainfall. 12GO ASIA is advising bus and train passengers to leave plenty of time to get to their departure stations.
