Iconic Bangkok Sukhumvit Road bar faces the bulldozers

The plot of prime real estate Bangkok’s iconic Cheap Charlie's Bar sits on has been sold and the establishment is set to be demolished. Cheap Charlie's is on a sub-soi of the city’s Sukhumvit Road Soi 11 and will be calling last orders for the final time on 31 March 2017.

In the 34 years since the original proprietor raised the bar’s shutters for the first time, Cheap Charlie's has evolved into something of an institution on Bangkok’s nightlife scene. Its unique accoutrements, decoration and location right on the street in the centre of a modern quarter of the city have proved an irresistible magnet for foreign expats and backpackers.

Ekkachai Budkajang is the nephew of Charlie and he confirmed the impending closure. He explained that he had received a letter from the land’s owner saying that the bar’s annual lease would not be renewed when it expired next March.

Mr Budkajang told local reporters he believed all the other shops, restaurants and cafés on the sub-soi plus the famous Suk 11 Hostel were all facing the same fate as the land had been sold to property developers. The eviction will also apply to the likes of Charley Brown’s Tapas Cafe, the quirky Alchemist cocktail bar and the award-winning Moghul Room Indian restaurant.
