The new rail developments are high-speed services that will connect Bangkok to Rayong and Hua Hin. The estimated budget for the two lines is THB248 billion. The government has already taken on PPPs for five projects and claims the partnerships will enable the projects to be completed more quickly.
The Bangkok-Hua Hin tracks will be 211kms long and will replace the current service in operation. The Bangkok-Rayong line is 194kms and is being built to service the rapidly expanding Eastern Economic Corridor and the high-tech industry parks slated for Rayong. It will also offer convenience for tourists travelling between Bangkok and Eastern Seaboard resorts including Pattaya.
Although the surveys have been completed and the blueprints drafted, the rail infrastructure enhancements are still awaiting the green light from environmental impact assessment studies. The National Environment Board of Thailand needs to endorse any development project assessments before they can start.
