English Premier League champions Leicester land in Bangkok

Thai football fans turned out in force yesterday to welcome Leicester City at Bangkok’s main airport. The newly crowned English Premier League (EPL) champions are visiting the homeland of owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha as part of their Asian victory tour.

When the Leicester squad walked into Suvarnabhumi Airport’s Arrivals hall they were cheered and garlands of sweet smelling jasmine were draped around their necks. Not all of the squad were able to travel to Thailand due to prior commitments but manager Claudio Ranieri was joined by the likes of Kasper Schmeichel and Shinji Okazaki.

The team are due to take a parade around the streets of Bangkok today to mark their newfound celebrity status. Business tycoon Mr Srivaddhanaprabha also owns King Power Duty Free. The Bangkok parade will start and finish at the group’s headquarters in Phayathai. En route, the Leicester players are expected to make stops at Wat Traimit and the Grand Palace.

The Grand Palace is the Thai king’s official residence while Mr Srivaddhanaprabha is a major benefactor of Traimit Temple. Leicester clinched the EPL title with a convincing 10 point lead. The triumph came just one season after the club narrowly avoided relegation to the League Championship.
