Motorcycle fans heading to Koh Samui for annual big bike fest

The Thai island of Koh Samui is the venue for a big bike extravaganza this weekend. Samui Bike Week 2016 is the eighth in the series. The main events begin tomorrow and culminate on Saturday with a concert featuring some of the most popular music artistes in Thailand.

Samui Bike Week is organised by the Riders Club of Thailand and jointly staged with sponsors like the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Samui’s Council and Tourism Association. The 2016 edition is themed on biking for peace and environmental conservation.

The organisers say more than 1,000 motorcyclists attended the seventh anniversary event in 2015. They say that judging by the number of motorcycles coming across on ferries from Suratthani this week the number will likely surpass last year.

Samui Bike Week features big bike convoys and displays plus vendors’ stalls selling motorcycle accessories, unique T-shirts and a huge assortment of snacks and beverages. Highlights of the festival for music fans on Saturday evening are stage appearances by Thai rock band Big Ass and by Sek Loso.

The venue for the stationary events is the fairground near Chaweng Lake Road. 12GO ASIA is the most practical source when buying ferry, or combination train-bus-ferry, tickets to Koh Samui.
