Thailand begins long Coronation Day holiday weekend tonight

This evening sees the start of a long holiday weekend in Thailand during which banks, government and immigration offices are closed. The 5 May is Coronation Day in the country and marks the 66th anniversary of the day King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially ascended the throne in 1950.

As the 5 May fell on a Thursday in 2016, the Thai government decided to designate the following day as a special holiday. This effectively gives Thai people four days to take a mini-break and explore their country. Tourists in Bangkok get the chance of visiting chambers of the Royal Palace which are off limits to the public for the rest of the year.

Operators of trains, buses and flights say there is usually significantly higher demand for tickets on long holidays and they do not expect this weekend to be any different. They advise prospective travellers to pre-book their seats. 12GO ASIA can help here as we offer a handy online ticket reservations service.

Wan Chatramongkhol is the Thai translation of Coronation Day. To commemorate the occasion, King Bhumibol, or his nominated delegates, stages a merit making ceremony at the Emerald Buddha Temple in Bangkok. In the evening, this is followed by the symbolic changing of the revered Buddha statue’s robes.
