Rainstorm and strong winds wreak havoc in Korat

A violent storm swept into the Thai city of Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday and blazed a trail of destruction. Driving wind and rain brought down power poles and cables and lofty advertising billboards and damaged houses.

Runoff from the rain flooded several buildings including a supermarket. Poles and billboards that collapsed on a bus depot near the crossroads for Pak Thongchai caved in the roofs of five buses.

A little bit west of the city centre, the sub-district of Sikew bore the full brunt of the storm and sustained extensive damage. According to the Thai Public Broadcasting Service, the total repair bill for the storm damage could top THB20 million.

Thailand is right in the middle of its worst drought in the past three decades. Isolated storms over the past two weeks have brought relief in some places, but not alleviated the water shortage that farmers and fruit-growers are facing.

Thais refer to the city of Nakhon Ratchasima as Korat. It is located in a strategic position for access to the northeast regions of Thailand and is the gateway to Khao Yai National Park. 12GO sells travel tickets for trains and buses from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nong Khai.
