Thai Mekong border town to stage Indochina fair

The governor of Mukdahan has released details of an exciting festival being staged to mark the onset of the traditional Lanna Thai New Year next week. The Thai border town is the venue for the Indochina Songkran Fair between 11 and 13 April 2016.

Governor Sorasit Ritsorakrai stated that the festival would feature light and sound shows plus the offering of donations to Buddhist monks to bring fortune for the forthcoming 12 months. He noted that the fair would include the Miss Indochina Beauty Pageant 2016 and traditional dance performances.

As is the case with most Thai fairs, vendors will be selling a good range of souvenirs and snacks. The added advantage of an Indochina themed fair is that as well as Thai products there will also be the likes of Vietnamese sausages, Lao sarongs and Cambodian woodcarvings on offer.

Mukdahan faces across the Mekong River to the Lao town of Savannaket. Mukdahan is a key transit point on what the governments of both countries call the East-West Economic Corridor to the three Indochinese countries. The Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge II spans the Mekong and links Mukdahan and Savannaket.

The Friendship Bridge opened to the public in 2007 and has simplified overland travel choices between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. 12GO ASIA collaborates with premium bus operators in providing tickets for travel between Bangkok and Mukdahan.
