Historic Thai fort spruced up for national Heritage Day

Volunteers in Chachoengsao joined hands on Saturday to clean up the town’s historic fortress.  The clean-up operation was held to mark Thai Heritage Day and saw the volunteers clear litter up and cut back foliage.

Prachin Buri National Museum organised the activity. Subongkot Tongthongthip is the museum’s director and he told reporters that it would help Thai people to learn about historic monuments and create a feeling of pride in their common history and heritage.

Thai Heritage Day commemorates the birthday of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Mr Tongthongthip said sprucing up the fort was a fitting tribute to the princess on her milestone 61st birthday.

The fort dates from the 1790s and when King Rama III sat on throne. It is a defensive structure alongside the Bang Pakong River and was designed to guard against marauding armies. Old cannons are still in place along its thick walls while a park in front is a pleasant spot to soak up the pastoral atmosphere.

Chachoengsao is 80kms to the east of Bangkok and although it is not a typical destination for tourists it does have a number of unique attractions besides the fort. Among these are Sothornwararamworaviharn Temple and Rim Nam Roi Pi Market. Chachoengsao is easily reached by bus, train or big bike supplied by 12GO ASIA.
