Thailand to go it alone on new hi speed rail link from Bangkok

Thailand’s prime-minister says the government has decided to pay for a new high-speed rail line itself. On a flying visit to the site for the project, Prayuth Chan-ocha told media representatives that Thailand had decided not to jointly fund the Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima line with China.

The general continued by saying that he had already spoken to his Chinese counterpart, Li Keqiang, and informed him that Thailand only needed technical and not monetary help with the project. He added that the government and relevant state agencies would begin mapping out an agenda for construction and the finance needed to see the project  to completion in July.

In his address to reporters, the prime-minister said the Thai treasury had sufficient funds to see the project through to completion. Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima are about 250kms apart and, if the rail project goes ahead, 250kmh trains will link them.

Current journey times by train between the two locations are an average of five hours. A part of the plan is to use the old tracks for goods trains. 12GO ASIA sells tickets for Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima bus and train services as well for other primary routes in Thailand.
