Power cut halts Bangkok Airport Rail Link for two hours

A power failure in a district of Bangkok yesterday resulted in a breakdown of Airport Rail Link services to the city. The power cut in Ramkhamhaeng District led to the breakdown of a train in the district and left passengers stranded on it in stifling heat.

The breakdown occurred at around 07:50 near Ramkhamhaeng Station on a train travelling between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Phaya Thai. Local news sources say that an emergency power system did not kick in when the main power supply failed and wiped out power and the air-conditioning.

The thermometer showed 35°C at the time of the incident. The heat in the carriages caused a group of the estimated 750 passengers on board to crack open emergency exits on the carriages and walk along the tracks to Ramkhamhaeng.

An Airport Rail Link spokesperson later said that it took more than two hours to get to other passengers on the stranded train. He explained that this was because other trains could not use the tracks as passengers were still walking on them.

The Airport Rail Link is the most convenient and economical means of getting from Suvarnabhumi to the central areas of Bangkok. For arriving passengers heading to Pattaya and other nearby locations, a bus from Suvarnabhumi Transport Centre is sometimes the easier option. 12GO ASIA offers service on select routes from the centre.
