Bangkok police boss says foreigners have to show ID when asked

The boss of Bangkok’s police force says all foreign nationals need to have their passports, or copies, on them at all times. Lieutenant-general Sanit Mahathavorn issued the order following a series of passport checks in prime tourism areas of the Thai capital on Friday evening.

The police operation targeted foreigners at 15 different entertainment venues in the city. Officers also set up checkpoints in locations such as Soi Nana and the Asoke-Montri junction. Lieutenant-general Mahathavorn said that the passport checks had gone smoothly and all those questioned had produced appropriate ID.

Explaining the reasoning behind the passport checks in prime tourism locations on one of the busiest nights of the week, the police commander claimed they might net criminals engaged in trans-national crimes. He noted that the enhanced police presence also instilled a sense of security for both tourists and residents alike.

Police officers attached to stations at Lumpini and Thonglor carried out the spot checks. Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are among the nightlife precincts covered by these districts while Patpong is just a stone’s throw from Lumpini Park.
