Two more commuter train routes in Bangkok get thumbs up

The committee with the remit of bringing Bangkok’s public transport system into the 21st century has okayed two new electric train routes. The working group known as the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has given the green light for the Yellow and Pink lines and is in the process of forwarding the proposal to the Thai government for final approval.

The MRT Yellow Line will run from Lardprao on the northeast side of Bangkok and across the city to the Samrong area of Samut Prakarn Province. The 30km tracks will be built as monorail. The Pink Line will cross the northern side of Bangkok and link Khaerai and Minburi. This route will also be elevated.

Deputy prime-minister Somkid Jatusripitak presided over the PPP meeting this week in which agreement was reached on the two train routes. The committee also debated the merits of putting the contracts to build the lines up for tender.

Mr Jatusripitak said that if the Thai cabinet agrees with the proposals as they stand, public companies will be invited to bid for the construction projects in June. The two lines are part of the master plan to upgrade the suburban train network in Bangkok.

Once all projects are complete, the city will have in excess of 200kms more of new lines. 12GO ASIA does not sell tickets for Bangkok suburban trains, but does offer a bespoke ticket reservations service for intercity buses and trains to all corners of Thailand.
