Decision on high speed rail link for Bangkok airports due for release

The Thai cabinet is expected to give the green light for the first part of a rail system that will eventually link Bangkok’s two airports to Pattaya. A proposal to build a new section of the current Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai to Don Muang Airport will be given to the cabinet for final approval.

Phaya Thai is the terminus station of the 28km-long Airport Rail Link line from Suvarnabhumi Airport. The feasibility report on the rail project endorsed the use of Phaya Thai as the interchange station for the two rail links as it is also a stop on the BTS Skytrain Sukhumvit Line.

The blueprint for the Phaya Thai-Don Muang line will see it built in two parts. The first sector as far as Bang Sue is 7.8kms long of which 3.5km will be underground and the rest overground. The second stretch to Don Muang will have to be coordinated to fit in with construction schedules for ongoing rail infrastructure projects in northern Bangkok

The study noted that the extension of the Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi to U Tapao Airport near Pattaya is not urgent at the moment. It concluded that the extension will become more of a priority as the latter airport gets busier.

At present, buses and taxis are the quickest way of getting between Bangkok and Pattaya. 12GO ASIA offers a personalised reservations service for these at prices our customers say are very competitive.
