Bangkok flower market to close after 60 years of sales

Vendors at Bangkok’s iconic Flower Market are in the process of packing up their stalls as the facility is closing down. Bangkokians call the market Pak Khlong Talad and its last full day of operations is the 28 February with a clean up scheduled for the following day.

The market is on an old city thoroughfare, Chak Phet Road, just north of the Chao Phraya River and authorities stated that the market needed to be shut down to allow traffic to flow more smoothly. A lot of the stalls occupy pavement space and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) wants to reclaim this.

Pak Khlong Talad was due to close at the end of January, but the BMA allowed a stay of execution until after Valentine’s Day. There were blue faces among some of the vendors on Sunday as they sold their final batches of red Valentine’s roses.

There has been a market of some kind at the site of Pak Khlong Talad for more than 200 years. The current market has operated round the clock for 60 years. The BMA has arranged three alternate locations for vendors to set up new stalls and these include Yodpiman Flower Market.

Pak Khlong Talad is vibrant, colourful and epitomises the Thai market of yesteryear. Travellers heading to Bangkok with tickets supplied by 12GO ASIA have just over 10 days to take in this historic attraction before it vanishes forever.
