Fences blocking access to Sihanoukville beach to be pulled down

The Cambodian government has ordered the demolition of fences alongside one of the resort town of Sihanoukville’s best-known beaches. Thong Khon is the nation’s tourism-minister and he told reporters that fences at locations on Independence Beach would be dismantled to give sunseekers unrestricted access.

The move is a part of a campaign by authorities in Cambodia’s favourite seaside resort to stop encroachment on its golden beaches. The minister said inspections will be conducted to determine whether developers had built hotels or any other structures on public land.

Mr Khon noted that public land was defined as the area up to 50-metres back from the shoreline. He said the committee had still not formulated a plan of action to deal with trespassers. Y Sokleng is the governor of Sihanoukville and he confirmed that workers have already started demolishing the fences.

The Tourism Ministry is coordinating with relevant agencies and officials in the country’s coastal provinces to deal with encroachments and to return beaches to the Cambodian people. Prime-minister Hun Sen signed off on the initiative early last week.

Sihanoukville is 220kms by road from Phnom Penh. There are no public passenger trains between the two and flight options are limited. This leaves bus or overcrowded taxi as the travel options. Giant Ibis is a premium bus company plying the route. 12GO ASIA’s reservations service allows you to pre-book your Giant Ibis journey.
