Remote Sihanoukville island gets nod for luxury resort complex

The Cambodian government recently endorsed a proposal to build a luxury holiday complex on an isolated Gulf of Thailand island. WorldBridge Group is one of the partners in the project and its CEO stated that it would cost US$1 billion to turn Koh Tang into a holiday playground.

Koh Tang, which translates to Legend Island, is approximately 50kms from the coast of the mainland seaside town of Sihanoukville. The master plan will see the island gain resort hotels, an 18-hole golf course, a theme park and its own small airport.

WorldBridge CEO Sear Rithy said the ground-breaking ceremony will be held before the end of 2016. He explained that the reason behind inviting China’s Nanshan Group to participate in the development of Koh Tang was that the company had a lot of experience in similar projects.

Commenting after the official signing-over ceremony, the Council for the Development of Cambodia’s general-secretary said environmental impact assessments had been carried out. Sok Chanda Sophea added that all concerned parties understood they had to conserve forests, beaches and traditional fishing zones.

At present, Koh Tang is sparsely populated. The only permanent inhabitants are soldiers, government officials and employees that work for the scuba-diving and sightseeing companies that use the island as an overnight stop on their outings.

Sihanoukville is four to five hours by bus from Phnom Penh. 12GO ASIA is an agent for Giant Ibis and provides a handy online reservations service for buses operated by this company.
