Thailand expands national park portfolio

Thailand’s national park operator recently announced the establishment of 21 national parks across the nation. Two of these have already been set up and are Doi Chong Mountain and Chet Sao Noi national parks.

Doi Chong is a series of low-lying peaks in the Sop Prap region of Lampang Province. Waterfalls and streams in the unspoilt expanse of forested hills feed the Wang River.

Chet Sao Noi is noted for its seven-level waterfall and is situated in Saraburi Province. The average gap along each tier is four metres and there are several pools suitable for a dip or leisurely swim between them. The falls are popular among Thai tourists and there are quite a few holiday resorts on the approach road to this park.

The other new designated parks are all due to come online before the end of 2016. Department of National Parks director Wittaya Nawapramote said other ones that have already received the green light are Tham Sakoen and Khun Sathan in Nan Province plus Tak’s Namtok Pha Charoen.

These parks are just awaiting official recognition in the Royal Gazette. Once all 21 have been established it will give a total of 148 parks covering 13 per cent of Thailand’s overall land area. 12GO ASIA sells tickets to the nearest towns to a high proportion of the nation’s national parks.
